Background

Nekemte Mulu Wangel Church (no.1) (NMWC) was founded in 1974 (1966 EC) 49 in Nekemte city, in western Oromia, Ethiopia. The church was the result of the revival movements of protestant religion since 1950s and missionary activities in 1960s. In fact, the evangelization movements in western Ethiopia by Evangelical Church of Mekane Yesus (ECMY) is noticeable.

In western Ethiopia, the movement arrived in 1960s and 70s through teachers, evangelists and high school students such as such as Mulugeta Mekuria, Asrat Zerihun, Tadese Negewo, Tamirat Bajiga, Merid Lema, and others.

The church was established by native missionaries including Fekadu Ofga’a, and Merid Lema. A number of teachers, students, workers and other believers used to serve the church as church elders, evangelist, and deacons. Since its establishment, MWNC has successfully reached all areas of Wallagga, Ilubabor and other areas with Gospel and established over 200 churches. Nowadays, the church membership is estimated to be over 6000 members without including members of the branch churches.
